40 years as donor and enlightener: NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’

The ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ National Endowment Fund has released a short video in which art historian Ivan Stefanov, the youngest member of the team, presents the most significant (in his opinion) from some 90,000 donations received over the past four decades.

On the Day of National Enlighteners, we virtually leaf through the book, ‘40 Years of NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ Donorship Mission’, in order to reach a wider public. It is not in vain that this volume, listing the most remarkable generous gestures of global and Bulgarian artists, scientists, organisations, and countries, bears this title—for donorship is woven into the Fund’s essence and memory, as it is in its future.

The video produced by Tsvetan Ignatovski highlights the NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ role as a guarantor for the observance of the will of the donor, as most of the works of art, the monetary gifts, books and archives, have been entrusted to the organisation so as to reach those to whom they are provided in the most transparent and unimpeachable way.

In addition, the Fund has been encouraging young writers for a quarter of a century through the National Short Story Competition in the name of Rashko Sugarev. And when one receives an excellent appraisal from proven talents such as Dimitar Korudzhiev, Deyan Enev, Theodora Dimova and Georgi Velichkov, one feels elated.

For more than twelve consecutive years, well-known and emerging authors, and small or well-established publishers have been measuring pages against each other for ‘Novel of the Year’, the most prestigious Bulgarian prose prize.

Although there has only been one edition to date, the competition for the National Prize in support of young talent in contemporary arts and science gathered a constellation of the brightest minds and talents of Bulgaria who have gained world fame and fulfilment.

UNESCO traditionally grants its patronage to NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ for the ‘River of Tolerance’ International Youth Festival, where students and their lecturers from art academies in the Balkans exchange their enthusiasm and ideas.

UNICEF is a lasting and desired partner of the Fund: the children’s drawing competition on the theme ,‘Together in Art for a Better Future’, is a joint initiative that has generated unforgettable exhibitions.

Our cooperation with the State Cultural Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as with scores of other organisations and institutions, is also excellent.

With all this activity, the ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ National Endowment Fund is conducting its awakening and enlightening mission to the full! Meanwhile, it pours its donative cause into other initiatives of moral value and sustainable development along the years.
