Thanks to NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’, the Sts Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian Sunday School Association, Dortmund, completes its project

‘Bulgarian Folk Tales and Songs—Guardians of the Thousand-year History of Our Sacred Language’ is a project of the Sts Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian Sunday School Association, Dortmund, Germany, that NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ supported through its 2024 session on Bulgarian native language.

Through traditional Bulgarian fairy tales and folk songs, the association’s team aims to motivate children to study their native language and feel its diversity, expressiveness and sonority.

The project provides for specific events:

Dramatisation of a Bulgarian folk tale, with performances by pupils from the Sts Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian Sunday School. Through this theatrical production, they demonstrate their creative skills and knowledge of our Bulgarian language. They draw lessons from each fairy tale, and they learn to make conscious choices in real life.

Monthly reading of Bulgarian folk tales and role-playing: in this way, learning their native language becomes not only useful, but also entertaining for pupils. Wearing theatrical costumes, they enter their roles—this being an interesting approach to learning and upgrading the language.

Art lessons in inventing their own fairy-tale characters—an enjoyable way to stimulate the imagination and develop a creative potential in children.

Music lessons in folklore tunes, conducted by a specialist teacher of Bulgarian folk singing. This enables children to feel the beauty of authentic folk costumes and the mysticism and knowledge that the Bulgarian folk song offers.
