NEF ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ donated a copy of the book ‘Dobry’ in Bulgarian to every child in the 4A class of St Ivan Rilski Secondary School

On 4 May 2022, the 4A class of St Ivan Rilski Secondary School welcomed to its classroom guests from the ‘13 Centuries of Bulgaria’ National Endowment Fund, which published, for the first time in Bulgarian, ‘Dobry’, the novel for children and adolescents by American writer Monica Shannon, illustrated by Bulgarian sculptor Atanas Katchamakoff, and translated by the poet Maria Doneva.

The emotional meeting was also attended by pupils from Class 4B, and by Daniela Tsankova, Deputy Director; Maria Georgieva, class tutor and organiser of the meeting, teachers, and experts from the Fund.

The pupils re-enacted a Bulgarian folk tale and presented selected favourite thoughts—quotes from world-famous books for children. Slava Ivanova, the Fund’s Executive Director, greeted the children and told them about ‘Dobry’, which reveals the fairy-tale world of Bulgarian traditions and folklore, while, in a unique way, Maria Doneva described all the curious moments relating to the translation of the book.

‘It is an honour, privilege, and responsibility for the large family of St Ivan Rilski 54th Secondary School to receive as a donation the book ‘Dobry’ by the American writer Monica Shannon, and illustrated by Atanas Katchamakoff. We believe that our pupils will become full citizens of Bulgaria with the novel ‘Dobry’ at hand,’ wrote Sonya Vasileva, the school’s Director, in a letter to the Fund.
