On 2 August 2022, Academician Velichko Minekov, the great Bulgarian sculptor, left us at the age of 93.
Having graduated in the specialism of Decorative Monumental Sculpture under Prof. Lyubomir Dalchev at the Academy of Arts in Sofia, Velichko Minekov created emblematic sculptural compositions and monuments both at home and abroad, winning numerous national and international awards. He was a long-standing teacher and professor of sculpture at the Academy, and rector from 1976 to 1983.
Works by Minekov feature in the collections of the World Food Organization in Geneva, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, and Antwerp City Hall.
‘For Velichko Minekov, making sculpture is the only way to exist, to live his life with greater intensity, to leave his stamp on space and time, the universe and history, his mark on the future.’ (Prof. Axinia Džurova).
